Garden Design

The Bay Village Pollinator Sanctuary is designed as a small, welcoming space that supports pollinators from early spring through fall. The layout features a gently curved, “bean-shaped” garden with a natural walking path made of stepping stones through the center, allowing visitors to experience the space up close.

The garden is planted with Ohio-native perennials and shrubs selected to provide a continuous source of nectar and pollen throughout the growing season. We chose these plants not only for their beauty and color, but because they are well-suited to our local environment and provide the greatest benefit to bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

The design follows a layered approach, with taller plants and shrubs toward the back and lower-growing flowers along the front and edges. Plants are grouped in clusters to create a more natural look and to make it easier for pollinators to find and use them.

Natural materials like mulch and stone are used throughout the space, and a small garden sign will help identify and explain the purpose of the sanctuary to visitors. 

The final location of the garden has not yet been selected and is currently pending approval from the City of Bay Village. Once a site is confirmed, the design may be adjusted slightly to fit the space while maintaining the overall vision of the project.
